Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli Resigns Amid Gen Z Protests; Sher Bahadur Deuba Injured

Published on

Kathmandu: Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday following intensifying Gen Z protests that have rocked the Himalayan nation. His resignation came after mounting criticism of his government’s handling of demonstrations, which turned violent after security forces shot dead 20 protesters – 18 in Kathmandu and two in Itahari, Sunsari.

Protestors Storm Parliament and Ministers’ Residences

Despite a government-imposed curfew, enraged protesters stormed the federal parliament building at Singha Durbar. Earlier in the day, ministers and their families were airlifted to safety after demonstrators broke into the ministers’ residential complex.

Ministerial Resignations Add to Political Turmoil

Political instability deepened as Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned on Monday, followed by three more ministers—Sports Minister Tejulal Chaudhary, Water Supply Minister Pradeep Yadav, and Agriculture Minister Ram Nath Adhikari—who stepped down just hours before Oli’s resignation.

Violence Targets Political Leaders’ Homes

On the second day of Gen Z-led demonstrations, protesters vandalized and set fire to the homes of several ministers and senior leaders. In a shocking development, a video emerged showing former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba injured and bloodied, surrounded by protesters.

The footage shows Deuba with a torn shirt, a visible head injury, and bleeding, alongside his wife, Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, being forcibly taken away by demonstrators from what is believed to be their family residence. Deuba is heard pleading with the youth to hand him over to security forces. Protesters are also seen looting belongings from the house.

Uncertain Path Ahead for Nepal

With Oli’s resignation, mounting casualties, and ministers stepping down, Nepal faces a deepening crisis. The Gen Z movement, which began as a youth-led protest, has now escalated into a nationwide uprising challenging the political establishment.

The safety of Sher Bahadur Deuba and Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba remains uncertain as tensions escalate across Kathmandu and other cities.
