India celebrated a proud moment on Wednesday as heavyweight boxer Nupur Sheoran assured India of its first medal at the World Boxing Championships 2025. The 26-year-old, granddaughter of the legendary Hawa Singh, defeated Uzbekistan’s Oltinoy Sotimboeva to storm into the semi-finals of the women’s +80kg category.

Nupur, who entered the competition directly in the quarterfinals, battled through a scrappy contest but prevailed 4-1 against her Uzbek opponent, ensuring at least a bronze medal finish for India.

With this victory, Nupur Sheoran at World Boxing Championships 2025 has written her name into history, becoming the first Indian to confirm a medal in the tournament. Her win brought cheer to Indian boxing fans, marking a significant achievement on the global stage.

Nupur Beats Sotimboeva in Quarterfinals

The clash against Oltinoy Sotimboeva turned dramatic in the final round. While the Uzbek boxer was docked a point for excessive holding, Nupur also had a point deducted for head usage soon after. Despite this, her composed punches and control secured her a 4-1 victory.

Nupur carries forward the fighting spirit of her grandfather, two-time Asian Games gold medallist Hawa Singh, who is regarded as the father of Indian boxing. Her journey reflects determination and the continuation of a glorious family tradition in the sport.

The women’s +80kg weight division is a non-Olympic category, featuring just 10 boxers in the ongoing competition. While not part of the Olympic roster, Nupur’s achievement in this class adds prestige to India’s boxing performance on the world stage.
