  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • Odisha begins digital self-enumeration for Census till April 15
  • First fully digital census initiative with online data submission
  • Over 1 lakh personnel to conduct field verification later

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha digital census self enumeration process has officially begun, marking a major shift towards India’s first fully digital population count. Citizens can now submit their details online until April 15, reducing reliance on traditional door-to-door data collection in the initial phase.

The move is expected to improve accuracy, speed, and transparency in census operations while encouraging citizen participation.

Odisha Digital Census Self Enumeration: How It Works

The process allows residents to log into the official Census platform and fill out their details digitally. The questionnaire includes 33 questions covering key aspects such as housing conditions, family structure, land ownership, vehicles, and LPG usage.

Importantly, caste-related data has also been included, making this exercise significant for policy planning and welfare targeting.

The initiative was formally launched with Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati becoming the first person in the state to complete the self-enumeration process.

What Happens After April 15 Census

Once the self-enumeration phase ends, the next stage will begin on April 16 with the House Listing Operation. This phase will continue till May 15.

During this period, trained enumerators will visit households across all 30 districts to verify the data submitted online and collect information from those who did not participate digitally.

Odisha Digital Census Self Enumeration Backed by Large Workforce

The scale of preparation reflects the importance of the exercise. Around 67 master trainers have already trained over 1,500 field trainers, who are now preparing more than one lakh personnel.

This includes over 1,00,000 enumerators and more than 17,000 supervisors who will handle field operations.

Mobile applications will be used for real-time data collection during visits, ensuring faster processing and reduced errors.

Awareness Campaign and Public Participation

To boost awareness, renowned sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarshan Pattnaik has been appointed as the campaign’s brand ambassador.

Authorities are encouraging citizens to participate in the digital phase to make the process smoother and reduce the burden on field teams.

Odisha Digital Census Self Enumeration Signals Data-Driven Governance:Why This Census Matters

This census is not just about counting people. It is about building a reliable data foundation for governance, planning, and welfare delivery.

Accurate population data helps in:

  • Better allocation of resources
  • Targeted welfare schemes
  • Infrastructure planning

The digital shift also reflects India’s broader push toward technology-driven governance.

The success of this phase will depend on public participation. If more people adopt self-enumeration, it could redefine how large-scale data collection is conducted in the country.
