Centre Approves Rs 40.5 Crore for Odisha EV Charging Stations

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha EV charging stations network is set for a major expansion after the Central Government approved a grant of Rs 40,50,75,740 for the State Transport Authority (STA) Odisha under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme. The funding is expected to accelerate the state’s transition towards cleaner transportation by expanding public charging infrastructure across Odisha.

The approval is part of the Centre’s nationwide plan to strengthen electric vehicle infrastructure and encourage wider EV adoption by improving charging accessibility for both private and commercial users.

Odisha EV Charging Stations to Expand Under PM E-DRIVE

The Ministry of Heavy Industries has approved financial assistance for the installation and commissioning of 688 new public EV charging stations along with four Battery Swapping Stations (BSS) across Odisha.

STA Odisha, appointed as the state’s nodal agency in November 2025, had submitted its proposal under the PM E-DRIVE portal in May 2026. Following technical evaluation, the proposal received Central approval, making Odisha one of the beneficiaries of the national EV infrastructure programme.

The PM E-DRIVE Scheme, launched with a total allocation of Rs 10,900 crore, earmarks Rs 2,000 crore specifically for the development of public EV charging infrastructure across the country.

Funding Structure and Implementation Plan

Under the scheme guidelines, STA Odisha will be responsible for installing, operating and maintaining the approved charging infrastructure. The agency must regularly update implementation progress through the government’s online monitoring portal and share operational information, including charger locations, availability, pricing and digital payment facilities, with the National Unified Hub being developed by the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

The scheme also allows eligible nodal agencies to receive 70 percent of the approved subsidy in advance to speed up project execution. The remaining 30 percent will be released after compliance with operational guidelines and successful commissioning of the charging stations.

Odisha EV Charging Stations Aim to Accelerate Green Mobility

The expansion of EV charging infrastructure is expected to improve charging accessibility for electric vehicle owners, reduce range anxiety and support Odisha’s clean mobility goals. A wider charging network could also encourage greater adoption of electric cars, buses and two-wheelers while strengthening investment in sustainable transport.
