Odisha Government Declares Two-Day Diwali Holiday on October 20 and 21

Published on

Amid widespread confusion over the exact date of Diwali this year, the Odisha government has officially announced a two-day holiday for the festival of lights on October 20 and 21, 2025. The clarification comes after the Mukti Mandap Pandit Mahasabha of the Jagannath Temple in Puri confirmed October 20 as the auspicious date for Diwali celebrations.

Odisha Government Confirms Diwali Holiday Dates

According to the original state government calendar, October 21 (Tuesday) was marked as the Diwali holiday. However, following the Mahasabha’s decision, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi approved an additional holiday on October 20. The official notification, issued on Saturday, confirmed that October 20 will be treated as a public holiday for all state government offices.

Additional Holiday Adjusted Against Fourth Saturday

Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari explained that the new holiday on October 20 will be adjusted against the fourth Saturday of the month. Government employees, therefore, will be required to attend office on October 25, which is normally a holiday. The adjustment ensures that employees enjoy the Diwali celebrations without affecting the overall working calendar.

Schools and Colleges to Remain Closed for Diwali

The School and Mass Education Department and the Higher Education Department have also announced that all schools and colleges in Odisha will remain closed on October 20 and 21 in observance of Diwali. However, educational institutions in poll-bound Nuapada district will remain open on October 20 due to the ongoing Model Code of Conduct.

Nuapada District to Observe Working Day on October 20

Minister Suresh Pujari further stated that all government offices in Nuapada district will remain open on October 20 since it is the last day for filing nominations for the November 11 by-election. He clarified that the decision aims to ensure smooth election-related procedures while allowing the rest of the state to celebrate the festival.
