Odisha Govt Acts After Puri Stampede: Two Cops Suspended, Collector and SP Transferred

Published on

Bhubaneswar: In response to the tragic Puri stampede that killed three devotees and injured nearly 50 others, the Odisha government has taken swift action, transferring top officials and suspending two police personnel.

Chief Minister Mohan Majhi described the incident as the result of unpardonable negligence and announced major administrative changes. Puri District Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and Superintendent of Police Vineet Agrawal have been transferred with immediate effect. Chanchal Rana, the Khurda District Collector, has been appointed as the new Puri Collector, while Pinak Mishra will now serve as Puri SP.

Further disciplinary action includes the suspension of DCP Bishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi, as per an official government release.

The Chief Minister also ordered an administrative inquiry into the incident, which will be supervised by the state Development Commissioner.

To support the families of those who lost their lives, the Odisha government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹25 lakh to each of the deceased’s next of kin.

The tragic incident unfolded at around 4 AM on Sunday near the Shree Gundicha Temple during the Rath Yatra celebrations. Massive crowds had gathered to witness the removal of the ‘Pahuda’ (the sacred veil) from the faces of the deities. Chaos erupted when two trucks carrying ritual materials entered the congested area near the chariots, triggering a deadly stampede.

This marks the first fatal crowd crush incident in recent memory during the historic Rath Yatra, prompting serious questions about crowd management and security planning.
