Odisha Govt Launches Disinfection Drive in Flood-Affected Villages to Prevent Disease Outbreaks

Published on

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has rolled out a statewide disinfection campaign aimed at controlling disease outbreaks in areas hit by recent floods and diarrhoea incidents. Spearheaded by the Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) and Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water (PR&DW) departments, the special drive is focused on sanitation, disease surveillance, and public awareness.

A review meeting chaired by H&FW Secretary Aswathy S. assessed the waterborne disease threat in affected regions. Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, Director of Public Health, presented field reports during the session.

The two-phase disinfection drive will be held on July 4 and July 11, targeting villages, health centres, schools, marketplaces, and public institutions. Measures will include super chlorination of water sources, cleanliness drives, and door-to-door awareness campaigns conducted by ASHA, ANM, and local health staff.

Community involvement is a key aspect, with PRI members, social workers, and local residents urged to participate actively. Food safety officers will conduct intensified checks at bottled water plants, hotels, and eateries to ensure compliance with hygiene standards.

To strengthen healthcare in flood-hit areas, the government is deploying MBBS doctors, stocking anti-venom, and enhancing lab surveillance. Senior officials from the state headquarters will monitor operations in real time.

Thanks to prompt intervention, the diarrhoea outbreak is under control, with only 190 active cases reported across five districts. Meanwhile, health authorities are also keeping a close watch on potential dengue and malaria outbreaks.
