Bhubaneswar: Senior citizens in Odisha who have not received welfare payments for up to five months are expected to get their pending dues along with their regular pension by October, the state government has informed the Legislative Assembly.
The issue came up in the Odisha Assembly after opposition members from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress questioned the government over the interruption in monthly welfare payments. In a written response, Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) Minister Nityananda Gond said the disruption was caused by procedural and technical problems, rather than a change in policy or a shortage of funds.
Odisha Old Age Pension Payments to Be Cleared
The government has said the accumulated pension arrears will be processed together with the scheduled October payment. The money is expected to be transferred directly to the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries.
The Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) currently covers 20,33,959 beneficiaries in Odisha, according to the information placed before the Assembly.
Under the existing assistance structure, beneficiaries aged 60 to 79 years receive Rs 1,000 per month, while those aged 80 years and above receive Rs 3,500 per month.
The payment disruption had affected a section of elderly beneficiaries who depend on regular welfare assistance for their monthly needs.
Technical Issues Behind Pension Payment Delay
Minister Nityananda Gond said the interruption was linked to administrative and technical difficulties. The government has been working to address problems involving the processing system and its links with central registries.
The SSEPD Department is coordinating with the State Finance Department, Treasury authorities and central government agencies to resolve the system-related issues.
The coordinated troubleshooting effort is aimed at restoring the payment process and clearing the accumulated dues.
October Payment to Include Pending Pension Arrears
According to the government’s response, technical repairs are now in their final stages. Once the remaining issues are resolved, the pending amounts are planned to be released along with the regular October disbursement.
For eligible senior citizens, this means the delayed payments are expected to be credited together rather than being released through separate payment cycles.
The government has also acknowledged the difficulties caused by the interruption and said administrative teams are working to ensure eligible beneficiaries receive their pending welfare assistance.
