BHUBANESWAR: Odisha premature release of life convicts marks another step in the state’s prison reform initiative, with the government approving the early release of 19 inmates serving life sentences in different jails. The decision was taken after eligible prisoners met the prescribed remission criteria, including consistent good behaviour, adherence to prison rules and active participation in reformative programmes.

Among those released are Ratan Ghosh of Jatni, Surendra Nath Bhol of Balipatna and Bipin Bihari Baral of Nuagaon, who were lodged at the Special Jail, Jharpada.

Odisha Premature Release of Life Convicts Based on Remission Criteria

The three inmates had been serving life imprisonment in separate murder cases. Their cases were reviewed under the state’s remission policy, which allows eligible prisoners to be considered for premature release after fulfilling specific conditions.

Jail authorities examined each prisoner’s conduct record, compliance with institutional discipline and involvement in rehabilitation activities before recommending remission.

Prison Reform Focuses on Rehabilitation

Officials said the latest decision reflects Odisha’s commitment to a correctional system that encourages behavioural transformation rather than punishment alone.

The government believes that prisoners who demonstrate genuine reform and readiness to lead a law-abiding life should be given an opportunity to return to society and rebuild their future.

More Eligible Prisoners Benefit From Odisha’s Remission Policy

The three inmates from Jharpada are among 19 life convicts across different correctional facilities in Odisha who have been granted premature release.

Authorities said the move is part of the state’s broader prison reform efforts aimed at supporting rehabilitation, promoting responsible behaviour among inmates and facilitating their successful reintegration into the community.
