BHUBNESWAR: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has stepped up Odisha’s campaign to secure UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status for the Puri Rath Yatra. In a letter to Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Chief Minister requested the Centre to expedite the nomination process and facilitate its early consideration by UNESCO.

The letter, dated August 1, states that the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration has already submitted the proposal along with all the required documents in the prescribed format.

Puri Rath Yatra UNESCO Nomination Gains Momentum

Describing the Rath Yatra as much more than a religious festival, the Chief Minister said it represents India’s rich civilisational heritage, cultural diversity and centuries-old traditions.

He highlighted that the annual festival reflects the country’s spiritual values while showcasing traditional craftsmanship, music, dance and community participation on a massive scale.

According to the Chief Minister, the centuries-old tradition attracts lakhs of devotees and tourists from across India and around the world every year.

CM Majhi Seeks Centre’s Support

In his letter, Majhi sought the personal intervention of Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to ensure the proposal is processed without delay by the Ministry of Culture and forwarded for UNESCO’s consideration.

He assured the Centre that the Odisha government and the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration would extend all necessary support during the nomination process.

UNESCO Recognition Expected to Boost Global Visibility

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that inclusion in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list would significantly enhance the global recognition of the Puri Rath Yatra.

He said the prestigious recognition would also strengthen long-term efforts to preserve, protect and promote the historic festival for future generations while highlighting Odisha’s rich cultural heritage on the international stage.
