IMD Issues Red Alert for Odisha, Forecasts Extremely Heavy Rainfall

BHUBANESWAR: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red weather warning for Odisha, forecasting widespread heavy rainfall across the state over the next 24 hours. The alert comes as active cyclonic circulations over eastern India are expected to strengthen monsoon activity and trigger intense rainfall in several districts.

According to the IMD, the weather system could lead to waterlogging, flooding of low-lying areas and disruption to normal life in parts of the state.

Red Alert for Mayurbhanj, Orange Warning for 14 Districts

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a red warning for Mayurbhanj, where extremely heavy rainfall is very likely.

An orange warning has been issued for the following 14 districts:

Balasore
Bhadrak
Cuttack
Sundargarh
Angul
Dhenkanal
Keonjhar
Subarnapur
Boudh
Bolangir
Kalahandi
Kandhamal
Gajapati
Ganjam

These districts are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Cyclonic Circulations Fuel Rainfall

The IMD said a cyclonic circulation has developed over North Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, positioned over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coastal region at an altitude of 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Another upper-air cyclonic circulation remains active over South Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh, extending between 1.5 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level.

Yellow Warning and Public Advisory

A yellow warning has also been issued for 15 other districts, where heavy rainfall is likely.

The IMD has cautioned that persistent rainfall may lead to:

Waterlogging in low-lying urban areas.
Inundation of roads and vulnerable localities.
Localised flooding and traffic disruptions.

Residents have been advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, and follow advisories issued by local authorities.
