  • Odisha received 16.4 mm of average rainfall, which is 118% above normal over the past 24 hours.

BHUBANESWAR:Odisha has recorded widespread heavy rainfall as a low-pressure system and an associated cyclonic circulation interact with the southwest monsoon trough.

The latest rainfall data shows that several parts of the state have received substantial precipitation, while the overall seasonal rainfall remains well above normal.

According to the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, Barkot in Debagada recorded 162 mm of rain during the past 24 hours, the highest in the state during the period.

Odisha Weather Today: Rainfall Remains Above Normal

Other locations that recorded significant rainfall included Jayant in Sambalpur with 117 mm, Chandpur in Rayagada with 113 mm and Titilagarh in Balangir with 97.9 mm.

Odisha’s average rainfall during the past 24 hours was 16.4 mm, compared with the normal figure of 7.5 mm. This represents a surplus of around 118%.

Since June 1, the state has received approximately 1,096.9 mm of rainfall, around 30% above the normal level. No district has reported a rainfall deficit so far.

Odisha Weather Today: Orange Warning From August 28

The current low-pressure area over Jharkhand and north Odisha is moving northwestward while moisture continues to feed into the region.

The weather system is expected to influence rainfall patterns across northern and northeastern Odisha.

The forecast indicates relatively little rainfall activity on August 26, but showers and thunderstorms are expected to return from August 27.

A yellow warning has been issued for districts including Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Khordha and Puri, with heavy rain and gusty winds of around 30 to 40 kmph possible.

From August 28, the weather situation is expected to become more active. Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Anugola, Dhenkanal and Sundargarh are expected to face orange-level warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Other districts will remain under yellow alert, with similar warnings continuing into August 29 to 31 across northern and central Odisha.

Odisha Rain Alert: Waterlogging and Lightning Risk

The combination of heavy rainfall and already saturated ground could increase the risk of waterlogging and rising river levels, particularly in low-lying areas.

Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain cautious as rainfall intensity increases. Lightning is another major concern during thunderstorms, making it important to avoid exposed areas during severe weather.

People are advised to follow official weather bulletins and local administration instructions rather than relying on unverified forecasts.

With Odisha already recording a significant seasonal rainfall surplus, the next few days will be important for monitoring river levels, drainage conditions and the possibility of localised flooding across the state.
