Online Gaming Threatens Children’s Health: Report Urges Age Verification

Published on

The rapid expansion of the online gaming industry has heightened concerns over its impact on children’s health and mental well-being. According to a report by CyberPeace, the lack of strong policy safeguards has exposed minors to addiction, exploitation, and developmental risks. The report stressed the urgent need for systematic intervention to regulate age checks, game content, and legal compliance.

Online Gaming Health Risks on Children Growing Rapidly

The report noted that early and excessive exposure to online gaming can affect both the physical and emotional development of children. Researchers and mental health professionals have repeatedly warned that prolonged gaming time is linked to obesity, sleep disorders, and emotional instability. The PEACH project, a long-term observational study, revealed that children with higher screen time tend to have a higher body mass index (BMI) and are more prone to obesity.

Physical and Mental Consequences of Excessive Gaming

Prolonged gaming sessions contribute to a sedentary lifestyle, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome. The CyberPeace report also linked online gaming addiction to disturbed sleep cycles and heightened stress levels. It added that emotional isolation, irritability, and anxiety are becoming more common among young players, leading to long-term psychological challenges.

CyberPeace Recommends Age Verification and Policy Clarity

The report recommended that the government establish a clear and effective age verification mechanism, as mandated under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Currently, the Act lacks a defined methodology for enforcing age-based restrictions. CyberPeace also called for detailed guidelines on in-game content, especially around violence, sexuality, and mature themes, similar to international frameworks like PEGI used in Europe.

Legal Vetting and Content Regulation for Child Safety

To ensure accountability, the report proposed that all game content undergo legal vetting before release. It urged policymakers to adopt a “living legislation” model that evolves with emerging gaming trends. Additionally, both game developers and publishers should fall under a unified regulatory system prioritizing child protection and health safety. Expanding content ratings with specific gradations for violence and sexual content would further help parents and regulators monitor children’s exposure.
