India Leads Biotech-Driven Industrial Revolution: Jitendra Singh

Published on

India is positioning itself as a global leader in biotechnology, according to Union Minister of State for Science and Technology (Independent Charge) Dr. Jitendra Singh. Speaking at the Second Foundation Day of the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC), Singh said that India has already laid the foundation for a biotechnology-led industrial revolution, marking the next major phase of global economic transformation.

India’s Biotechnology Ecosystem Fuels Industrial Transformation

Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted that India’s biotechnology sector is no longer working in isolation but has evolved into a robust, innovation-led ecosystem that integrates institutions, industry, and entrepreneurs. He noted that this transformation is driven by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to end the era of siloed operations and create a unified scientific framework that enhances collaboration and productivity.

Integration Under BRIC Strengthens Biotech Innovation

The minister praised the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) for initiating the integration of 14 institutes under the BRIC umbrella. He said that this merger has created a multiplier effect, ensuring stronger coordination and greater research efficiency. Singh added that even institutes outside BRIC’s structure are now working in sync, which reflects the growing synergy across India’s biotechnology landscape.

Public-Private Partnerships Drive Biotech Growth in India

Emphasising the role of collaboration, Singh launched the BRIC-BIRAC Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) Program to support early-stage biotech startups. He cited several success stories from India’s biotech sector, including the development of antibiotics, vaccines, and the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine developed through public-private partnerships. These achievements, he said, illustrate India’s growing capacity to turn scientific research into impactful health and industrial solutions.

RDI Scheme to Boost Research and Innovation in Biotechnology

Dr. Singh also referred to the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Scheme Fund of ₹1 lakh crore, announced by Prime Minister Modi on November 3, 2025. The scheme aims to promote a private sector-driven innovation ecosystem and accelerate the nation’s R&D efforts. He said the initiative would empower BRIC institutes to convert laboratory research into affordable market-ready products that can boost healthcare, industry, and the economy.
