Pakistan Raises Alarm After India’s Successful Agni-5 Missile Test

Pakistan has voiced strong concerns after India’s successful test of its Agni-5 ballistic missile, warning that New Delhi’s growing weapons capability poses a serious threat to regional peace and stability.

Pakistan Labels India’s Focus a ‘Dangerous Trend’

During his weekly press briefing on Friday, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said India’s recent test of the long-range missile represents a “dangerous trend” in South Asia’s security landscape.

“We are closely watching India’s weapons purchases… this is not only a risk to Pakistan’s security but also to regional stability,” Khan said.

He added that Pakistan has raised this issue with its allies and criticized the international community for ignoring India’s expanding military capabilities.

India’s Agni-5 Missile Test

India successfully conducted the Agni-5 missile test on Wednesday from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha. The Defence Ministry confirmed that the missile met all operational and technical requirements.

The Agni-5, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has a strike range of about 5,000 km and can reach an altitude of 600 km. The missile’s range puts not only Pakistan but also China within its reach, making it a critical element of India’s strategic deterrence.

In March 2024, India had already tested the Agni-5 equipped with MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle) technology, allowing a single missile to carry and target multiple warheads.

Why Pakistan is Worried

Defence experts say that the Agni-5 enhances India’s second-strike capability, strengthening its nuclear deterrence posture. Pakistan fears that this shift could destabilize the regional strategic balance, making the subcontinent more volatile.

With India’s latest success, Islamabad has reiterated its call for international scrutiny on New Delhi’s weapons program.
