PM Modi Announces ₹1,600 Crore Flood Relief Package for Punjab

Punjab: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday visited Punjab to review the devastation caused by heavy rains, cloudbursts, and floods. The Prime Minister conducted an aerial survey of flood-hit regions and chaired a high-level meeting in Gurdaspur to assess relief measures and damage.

₹1,600 Crore Relief Package for Punjab

PM Modi announced a financial package of ₹1,600 crore for Punjab, in addition to the ₹12,000 crore already available in the state’s kitty. The package includes an advance release of the second instalment of SDRF and support under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.

He also declared ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. Children orphaned in the floods and landslides will receive comprehensive welfare support under the PM CARES for Children scheme.

Rebuilding Homes, Schools, and Farms

The Prime Minister stressed a multi-dimensional recovery plan, with initiatives covering housing, infrastructure, agriculture, and education. Key measures include:

  • Rebuilding damaged homes under PM Awaas Yojana (Gramin) with a special project proposal from the Punjab government.
  • Restoration of national highways and damaged schools with assistance under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.
  • Distribution of mini livestock kits and targeted support for farmers without power connections.
  • Refurbishment of damaged bore wells and convergence with MNRE for solar-based irrigation pumps under the Per Drop More Crop scheme.

Water Harvesting & Long-Term Sustainability

PM Modi announced large-scale construction and repair of recharge structures under the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari program to boost rainwater harvesting and groundwater levels, ensuring long-term water security for Punjab.

Meeting Families and Relief Forces

The Prime Minister met flood-affected families, expressed condolences, and assured them of full support. He also interacted with NDRF, SDRF, Army, and Aapda Mitra volunteers, praising their relentless rescue and relief efforts.

Central Teams to Assess Damage

The Union Government has dispatched Inter-Ministerial Central Teams to Punjab for damage assessment. Further assistance will be considered based on their reports and the memorandum submitted by the state.

Reassuring Punjab, PM Modi said the Central Government stands firmly with the state and will make every possible effort to restore normalcy at the earliest.
