Silchar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth ₹23,550 crore in Silchar, Assam, stating that the initiatives will strengthen connectivity, generate employment and transform Barak Valley into a major logistics hub in the North East.

Addressing a public gathering in Silchar, the Prime Minister said the projects spanning railways, highways and education sectors will improve trade routes and open new opportunities for local youth.

The data suggests that improving connectivity across the North East is a key strategy in integrating the region with national and international markets.

Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor to Transform Connectivity

A major highlight of the PM Modi Assam projects Silchar announcement was the groundwork for the ₹24,000 crore Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor.

The access-controlled highway is expected to:

  • Improve connectivity between Assam, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura
  • Reduce travel time across the region
  • Strengthen cross-border trade routes with South-East Asia

The Prime Minister said the corridor will play an important role in advancing India’s Act East Policy.

Rail and Road Projects to Improve Mobility

Several other infrastructure projects were also announced to modernise transport in the region.

Key initiatives include:

  • Construction of a new flyover in Silchar
  • Rail electrification across more than 2,500 km of railway network in Assam
  • Improved connectivity for educational institutions such as National Institute of Technology Silchar and Assam University

The government believes that these projects will make travel easier for students, businesses and commuters.

Focus on Farmers, Tea Garden Workers and Education

During his speech, the Prime Minister highlighted the role of farmers and tea garden workers in Assam’s development.

He said more than ₹20,000 crore has been transferred to farmers in Assam under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.

The government also announced plans to establish a new agriculture college in Patharkandi, which will promote agricultural research and support agri-startups in the Barak Valley.

Development Push for Border Villages

Prime Minister Modi also spoke about expanding the Vibrant Village Programme.

He said the government now considers border villages as “the first villages of the country”, highlighting infrastructure improvements in border regions including areas in Cachar district.

Assam Emerging as Health and Technology Hub

The Prime Minister praised the government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma for granting land rights to tea garden families.

According to Modi, the move will help families access welfare schemes related to housing, electricity and drinking water.
