PM Modi Begins Landmark 5-Nation Tour: Ghana, Argentina, Brazil, Namibia & Trinidad on Strategic Agenda

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today embarked on his most ambitious diplomatic tour in nearly a decade, covering five nations across three continents. The tour begins in Ghana and will conclude in Namibia on July 10, with strategic stops in Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Brazil in between.

This expansive outreach aims to boost India’s global footprint in trade, digital infrastructure, energy security, diaspora engagement, and strategic partnerships.

Ghana (July 2–3)

Modi’s visit to Ghana, his first to the West African nation as Prime Minister, marks a historic moment—no Indian PM has visited the country in nearly 30 years. Talks with President John Dramani Mahama will cover partnerships in defence, critical minerals, agriculture, and the creation of a vaccine hub.

India and Ghana share deep diplomatic roots dating back to 1957. Bilateral trade hit $3.13 billion in 2024–25, with India emerging as Ghana’s third-largest investor.

Trinidad and Tobago (July 3)

Next, Modi travels to Trinidad and Tobago, where he will meet PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar and President Christine Carla Kangaloo, both of Indian origin. This marks the 180th anniversary of Indian migration to the Caribbean nation.

Talks will include digital public infrastructure, renewable energy, pharma trade, and the country’s adoption of India’s UPI platform. Trade between the nations stood at $341.61 million in 2023–24.

Argentina (July 4)

In Argentina, PM Modi is scheduled to meet President Javier Milei. It’s the first bilateral visit by an Indian PM since 1968, and will focus on mining, telemedicine, food security, and green energy.

India and Argentina elevated ties to a strategic partnership in 2019, with bilateral trade reaching $6.4 billion in 2022. India remains one of Argentina’s key trading partners.

Brazil (July 6–8)

Modi will then attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, followed by a state visit. Discussions with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília will revolve around climate change, AI regulation, energy, agriculture, and terrorism—including India’s stance post-Pahalgam attack.

India-Brazil trade stands at $12 billion, with Brazil being India’s top trading partner in South America.

Namibia (July 9–10)

Modi will wrap up his tour in Namibia, marking just the third-ever visit by an Indian PM. Talks with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will center around digital fintech, UPI integration, and critical mineral collaboration.

India views Namibia as a vital partner in energy diversification, especially in uranium, copper, and diamonds. Trade between the nations was valued at $650 million in 2023.

Modi is also expected to address Namibia’s Parliament and pay tribute to Dr. Sam Nujoma, the country’s founding father.

This tour underscores India’s expanding global engagement and its intent to forge deep-rooted partnerships beyond traditional allies—especially in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
