PM Modi Calls for ‘Swadeshi’ Push Amid Global Uncertainty and US Tariffs on Indian Exports

Published on

Varanasi: Days after US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian exports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on Indians to embrace ‘swadeshi’ (locally made) products and support India’s economic interests during a rally in Varanasi on Saturday.

India Must Prioritize Its Economic Interests

Referring to the global economic slowdown and rising trade protectionism, PM Modi said,

“Today, the world economy is going through many ups and downs. There is an atmosphere of uncertainty. In such a situation, every country is focusing on its own interests. India must do the same.”

He urged every Indian to resolve to buy local products, supporting farmers, industries, and employment for the youth. The push comes as India aims to become the third-largest economy in the world.

‘Vocal for Local’ Mantra Reinforced

PM Modi stressed that every citizen should adopt the ‘vocal for local’ mantra, explaining,

“When we decide to buy anything, there should be only one measure: Was this made by the people of India, using their skill and sweat?”

He also made a special appeal to businesses and shopkeepers to prioritize selling Indian-made goods, calling it a “true service to the country.”

Response to Trump’s Tariff Announcement

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian exports, citing India’s energy ties with Russia. He controversially described India and Russia as “dead economies.”

In response, the Indian government has initiated a review of the situation. Speaking in Parliament, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stated,

“The implications of the recent developments are being examined. We are in consultation with stakeholders and will take all necessary steps to safeguard India’s national interest.”

He also mentioned ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement with the United States.

With rising global tensions and economic challenges, Prime Minister Modi’s call for ‘swadeshi’ and self-reliance aligns with India’s long-term goals of economic resilience and growth. As trade tensions escalate, this renewed push for local goods may become central to India’s economic strategy.
