New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation today with his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen, during which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership and called for the early conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Strong Push for India-EU FTA
PM Modi, in a post on X, highlighted that the leaders discussed bilateral and global priorities:
“Had a very good conversation with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark today. We reaffirmed our strong commitment to strengthening our Green Strategic Partnership and to an early conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement. Conveyed best wishes for Denmark’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Also discussed our shared interest in bringing an early end to the conflict in Ukraine.”
Prime Minister Frederiksen, in her own post, emphasized the importance of deepened cooperation and collective action against global challenges:
“We reaffirmed the strength of our relations and Green Strategic Partnership. Exchanged views on global challenges. I emphasized importance of cooperation, also on addressing global consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine.”
Expanding the Green Strategic Partnership
According to the Indian readout, the leaders agreed to expand cooperation across multiple sectors including:
- Trade & Investment
- Innovation & Technology
- Energy Transition
- Water Management
- Food Processing
- Sustainable Development
PM Modi also conveyed his best wishes for Denmark’s ongoing Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) as well as for its tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Ukraine Conflict: Call for Peaceful Resolution
Both leaders also discussed issues of regional and global importance, with PM Modi reiterating India’s consistent stance in support of a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict and the early restoration of peace and stability.
Prime Minister Frederiksen reaffirmed Denmark’s strong support for:
- The conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-EU FTA.
- The success of the upcoming AI Impact Summit, to be hosted by India in 2026.
Denmark’s Support for Ukraine
The phone call came shortly after Frederiksen’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on September 3, ahead of the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) leaders’ summit.
Frederiksen’s government has provided military and financial aid to Kyiv and has been a strong advocate for Ukraine’s EU and NATO membership. During Denmark’s EU Council Presidency (H2 2025), advancing Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations will remain a top priority.
