PM Modi Holds Key Bilateral Meetings with Global Leaders at G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a key bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. Mr. Modi emphasised the strategic importance of India-Canada relations and called for collaborative efforts to strengthen democracy and humanity.

In a social media post, he stated that India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values and the rule of law, highlighting opportunities for cooperation in trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals, and fertilisers.

First-Ever Meeting with Mexico’s President

PM Modi met Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo for the first time. They agreed to enhance bilateral ties in trade, innovation, science & tech, start-ups, and automotive sectors, along with exploring new cooperation in semiconductors, AI, quantum technologies, and critical minerals. The leaders also discussed regional and global challenges and priorities of the Global South.

Deepening Strategic Partnership with South Korea

In his meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung, PM Modi reaffirmed commitment to enhancing the India–South Korea Special Strategic Partnership. Key focus areas included emerging technologies, trade, shipbuilding, green hydrogen, and cultural cooperation.

Strengthening Ties with Germany

PM Modi also met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The two leaders reviewed ongoing collaborations and explored further cooperation in defence, trade, sustainable development, education, green energy, technology and innovation. PM Modi thanked Germany for its support in India’s fight against terrorism and reaffirmed commitment to deepening security and counter-terrorism cooperation.

Meeting with French President Macron

PM Modi also held a brief conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron. They discussed broad global issues and reaffirmed their commitment to working together for the betterment of the planet.

Boosting Ties with the United Kingdom

In a pull-aside meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, PM Modi said bilateral ties are gaining strength. He noted progress in trade and commerce and said both countries will continue to accelerate momentum in their partnership.

Insights with Japan’s Prime Minister

PM Modi had an “insightful deliberation” with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, highlighting mutual commitment to strengthening ties across various sectors, especially technology and innovation.

Multilateral Engagements at G7 Summit

On the sidelines of the G7 Outreach Summit, PM Modi also interacted with leaders from South Africa, Australia, Italy, and Brazil, including Cyril Ramaphosa, Anthony Albanese, Giorgia Meloni, and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, reflecting India’s growing role in global diplomacy and the Global South.
