Indian Navy Commissions INS Arnala, First Indigenous ASW Shallow Water Craft

Published on

The Indian Navy today commissioned INS Arnala, the nation’s first Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. The commissioning ceremony was presided over by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan.

A Major Step in Coastal Defence

INS Arnala is the first of 16 ASW-SWC vessels planned for induction, marking a significant advancement in India’s coastal defence infrastructure. The vessel was formally delivered to the Navy on May 8th and is named after the historic Arnala Fort off Maharashtra’s coast.

Indigenous Engineering and Design

Designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, in collaboration with L&T Shipbuilders, the ship exemplifies India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. With over 80% indigenous content, it showcases India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

INS Arnala is 77.6 meters long, displaces over 1,490 tonnes, and is the largest Indian Navy vessel powered by a diesel engine-waterjet propulsion system. This cutting-edge propulsion enhances maneuverability and operational performance in shallow coastal waters.

The commissioning of INS Arnala bolsters India’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities and strengthens its maritime readiness in the Indian Ocean Region. It also reflects India’s strategic intent to secure its coastal assets and trade routes through indigenous defence production.
