PM Modi Pushes for Tech Self-Reliance

Published on

In Bengaluru’s tech hub, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reiterated the importance of tech self-reliance for India’s future, declaring that the country is “rapidly progressing” towards becoming one of the world’s top three economies.

PM Modi’s Call for Tech Self-Reliance in India

Speaking at IIIT-Bangalore after inaugurating major mobility projects, PM Modi said that while Indian tech companies have achieved global success, it is now time to focus on meeting the nation’s own technological needs. “Our next big priority should be becoming self-reliant in technology,” he stated, calling for accelerated development of new products and software to serve domestic industries.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the 19.16-km Yellow Line of Bengaluru Metro, built at a cost of ₹7,160 crore, expanding the city’s network to 96 km. He also laid the foundation stone for Phase-3 of the Bengaluru Metro, worth over ₹15,610 crore, and flagged off three Vande Bharat Express trains between Bengaluru–Belagavi, Nagpur–Pune, and Katra–Amritsar. He later rode the new metro line from Ragigudda to Electronic City.

Economic Growth Tied to Tech Self-Reliance Vision

Highlighting India’s strong economic momentum, PM Modi noted that the country’s economy has risen from 10th place to the top five globally in the past 11 years, with a clear trajectory toward the top three. He cited export growth—from $468 billion before 2014 to $824 billion today—and India’s emergence as a top-five mobile handset exporter, shifting from an import-dependent market.

Bengaluru, he said, has been central to this transformation, with electronics exports rising from $6 billion to nearly $38 billion, and automobile exports doubling to make India the fourth-largest global exporter. He urged that all Indian products follow the “Zero Defect, Zero Effect” principle for quality and environmental sustainability.

PM Modi also praised the role of Karnataka’s youth and Indian forces in Operation Sindoor, attributing its success to advanced technology and the Make-in-India defence initiative.
