PM Modi’s Bullet Train Ride with Japanese PM from Tokyo to Sendai Strengthens India-Japan Economic Security
Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a memorable bullet train journey from Tokyo to Sendai on Friday, accompanied by his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba. The high-speed rail experience was part of PM Modi’s two-day official visit to Japan for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. During the visit, both leaders underscored the growing partnership between the two nations in technology, connectivity, and economic security.
The journey to Sendai was more than symbolic—it highlighted Japan’s expertise in modern rail technology and India’s commitment to adopting world-class infrastructure. Both prime ministers shared glimpses of their travel on social media, with the Japanese PM posting, “With Prime Minister Modi to Sendai. Continuing from last night, I’m accompanying him from inside the car.”
India-Japan bullet train cooperation takes center stage
Upon reaching Sendai, the leaders visited the East Japan Railway Company facilities, where they interacted with Indian loco pilots currently undergoing training. They were also introduced to the new ALFA-X train and received a detailed briefing from JR East officials on the latest advancements in bullet train technology.
PM Modi and Ishiba also reaffirmed the importance of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, describing it as the flagship collaboration between India and Japan in bullet train cooperation. They agreed to fast-track the commencement of operations while working on the installation of Japanese signalling systems and the introduction of Shinkansen rolling stock in India.
Semiconductor collaboration boosts India-Japan economic security
A key highlight of the Sendai visit was the tour of a new semiconductor wafer fabrication plant being developed in Ohira Village, Miyagi Prefecture. The facility is part of the Japan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (JSMC), a joint venture involving Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), SBI Holdings, and Japanese partners.
The plant will initially manufacture 12-inch semiconductor wafers using 40-nanometre technology, with plans to expand to 28 nm and 55 nm nodes. For India, this initiative is crucial as both nations push for resilient supply chains in critical and emerging technologies such as semiconductors, clean energy, critical minerals, and advanced telecommunications.
PM Modi and Shigeru Ishiba launch India-Japan Economic Security Initiative
Both leaders jointly announced the India-Japan Economic Security Initiative, aimed at strengthening supply chains for essential goods and boosting cooperation in emerging sectors. This step highlights the shared vision of India and Japan in reducing dependency on imports and securing long-term technological advancement.
Japan’s move to revive its semiconductor industry aligns with India’s goal of becoming a global hub for electronics and chip manufacturing. The partnership promises to open doors for knowledge exchange, investments, and advanced research opportunities.
Strengthening future cooperation between India and Japan
During discussions, Prime Minister Modi praised Japan’s offer to introduce the advanced E10 series of the Shinkansen in India by the early 2030s. This includes the deployment of the General Inspection Train (GIT) and the E5 series rolling stock, which will set new benchmarks for India’s railway modernization.
The Sendai visit not only showcased Japan’s technological edge but also reaffirmed the trust and strategic partnership between the two countries. With stronger ties in infrastructure, semiconductors, and economic security, India and Japan are charting a path for future growth and innovation.
