Chandigarh:Punjab exam paper leak controversy has triggered a fresh political showdown, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding the resignation of Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains over allegations of irregularities in several recruitment and board examinations. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, however, has strongly rejected the accusations, insisting that no examination paper was leaked during its tenure.
The latest exchange has extended the national debate on examination integrity, with political parties accusing one another of failing to protect the credibility of public examinations.
Punjab Exam Paper Leak Allegations Spark Political Attack
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari alleged that multiple examinations in Punjab had been affected by irregularities. He referred to alleged issues involving the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class 12 English examination, the Punjab State Teacher Eligibility Test (PSTET), the Agriculture Development Officer recruitment examination and several other recruitment tests.
The BJP argued that students and job aspirants deserved accountability and questioned why the state’s Education Minister had not stepped down amid the allegations.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also criticised the state government, claiming that several examination-related controversies had surfaced in recent years. He called for greater transparency and said maintaining public confidence in the examination system should remain a priority.
Bhagwant Mann Rejects Paper Leak Claims
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann dismissed the allegations, stating that there had not been a single paper leak in Punjab during the last four and a half years. He acknowledged that authorities had detected isolated cheating attempts at two examination centres but maintained that officials acted immediately against those involved.
AAP leader Baltej Pannu also defended the government’s record, saying the opposition was misleading the public by equating isolated cheating incidents with paper leaks. He accused the BJP and Congress of politicising the issue instead of recognising the action taken by the administration against malpractice.

The controversy comes amid heightened nationwide attention on examination transparency following recent debates over competitive examinations. With political parties continuing to demand greater accountability, the Punjab government’s handling of examination security is likely to remain under scrutiny as calls for stronger safeguards and reforms continue.
