Rajya Sabha Debates Operation Sindoor: Rajnath Singh Warns of Retaliation Against Terrorism

The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday commenced a special discussion on Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 innocent lives. The House saw fiery exchanges between the government and opposition over national security, intelligence lapses, and political accountability.

Defence Minister Hails Operation Sindoor as a Message of Zero Tolerance

Initiating the debate, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the Indian Army and security forces for swiftly neutralizing three terrorists responsible for the brutal attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

“Operation Sindoor was not just a tactical strike—it was a strategic message to terrorists and their sponsors that India has zero tolerance towards terrorism,” Singh said.

He revealed that over 100 terrorists were eliminated in retaliatory strikes, and made it clear that India will not bow down to Pakistan’s nuclear blackmail or any form of asymmetric warfare.

India Will Resume Operation Sindoor If Provoked Again: Rajnath Singh

Highlighting India’s readiness, Singh warned:

“If Pakistan dares any misadventure in the future, Operation Sindoor will resume without hesitation.”

He emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India had shed the image of a “soft target.” Singh also noted that defence exports have risen to ₹30,000 crore in 2025, reaching nearly 100 countries, with a goal of ₹50,000 crore by 2029.

Opposition Slams Government Over Intelligence Failure and Ceasefire

Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress) accused the government of intelligence failure, citing the Pahalgam, Uri, and Pulwama attacks as examples. He questioned the ceasefire decision during Operation Sindoor and demanded accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“Who is responsible for letting terrorists breach our security again and again?” Kharge asked.

Tiruchi Siva (DMK) criticized the Centre for not responding to opposition demands for a special session and ignoring questions on accountability. TMC’s Sagarika Ghose also voiced concern over the non-disclosure of critical details surrounding the operation and the Pahalgam incident.

Rajnath Singh firmly denied claims of international influence behind the ceasefire:

“There were no discussions between PM Modi and US President Trump. The ceasefire was a strategic move, not one made under pressure.”

He reaffirmed the government’s autonomy in defence decisions and praised the operational freedom now granted to the armed forces, including emergency procurement capabilities.
