Blood Moon lunar eclipse 2025: From Ladakh to Tamil Nadu, skywatchers on Sunday night turned their eyes skyward to witness a spectacular ‘Blood Moon’ or total lunar eclipse. Despite cloudy skies and monsoon showers in several regions, millions observed the celestial event either directly or through live streams hosted by astronomy groups across the world.
The eclipse began at 9:57 pm, when Earth’s shadow started covering the lunar disc. By 11:01 pm, the moon was fully cloaked, transforming into a glowing copper-red orb — a phenomenon that occurs because sunlight reaching the moon is filtered and scattered through Earth’s atmosphere.
Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse 2025 Delights Skywatchers
Former Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium director BS Shylaja explained that the reddish hue is caused by Earth’s atmosphere bending sunlight. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics set up telescopes in Bengaluru, Ladakh, and Tamil Nadu, streaming the eclipse live on social media for those unable to witness it in person.
Longest Total Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse 2025
Sunday’s eclipse marked the longest total lunar eclipse visible from India since 2022 and the first to be observed across the entire country since July 27, 2018. Viewers in Asia, parts of Europe, Africa, and western Australia were also treated to the rare sight.
Clouds Disrupt Viewing in Parts of India
In many areas, cloudy skies obstructed the view, disappointing stargazers. However, global live streams offered uninterrupted visuals of the Blood Moon, ensuring enthusiasts could still witness the event in real time.
Next Total Lunar Eclipse in 2028
Astronomers noted that the next total lunar eclipse visible from India will occur on December 31, 2028. Eclipses do not take place every full moon, as the moon’s orbit is tilted about 5 degrees to Earth’s orbit around the sun, making such alignments rare and special.
