Shaheed Diwas 2025: PM Modi Pays Tributes To Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru
Shaheed Diwas 2025: PM Modi Pays Tributes To Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru: Martyrs’ Day, also known as Shaheed Diwas, commemorates the valor and dedication of India’s freedom warriors who gave their lives in pursuit of the country’s independence. Three revolutionary freedom fighters in their early twenties—Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru—were executed in the Lahore jail on March 23, 1931. The British colonial rulers sentenced the three to death.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tributes to the freedom fighters. “Today, our nation remembers the supreme sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. Their fearless pursuit of freedom and justice continues to inspire us all,” he wrote in a post on X.

Shaheed Diwas 2025: HISTORY
There were massive demonstrations when the Simon Commission, an all-British group, came to India in 1928 to make decisions about its government. On October 30, 1928, Lala Lajpat Rai, a well-known Indian freedom fighter, held a demonstration in Lahore. Lala Lajpat Rai was seriously hurt when Police Superintendent James A. Scott ordered a baton charge, and on November 17, 1928, he passed away from injuries sustained in a police lathi charge.
In an attempt to take revenge for Lala Lajpat Rai’s killing, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru joined the liberation movement. In a case of mistaken identity, they killed British police officer John Saunders instead of their intended target, Superintendent of Police James Scott, who had ordered the lathi charge.
The three revolutionaries were inspired by socialist principles and belonged to the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). They were taken into custody, put on trial, and ultimately given the death penalty for killing Saunders. On March 23, 1931, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were hanged in Lahore Central Jail.
