Smriti Mandhana’s Century Powers India Women to Record T20I Win Over England

Published on

India Women’s cricket team delivered a commanding performance to defeat England by 97 runs in the first T20I at Trent Bridge on Saturday, June 28. Stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana starred with a sensational century, helping India post an imposing total of 210/5 in 20 overs. The massive target proved too steep for the hosts, who were bowled out for 113 in just 14.5 overs.

India was without regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who was ruled out after being hit during a warm-up game. However, Mandhana stepped up with a match-winning 100 and took control from the outset. Despite a slow start during the powerplay, Mandhana unleashed a flurry of boundaries, especially in the seventh over, taking on England’s premier spinner Sophie Ecclestone.

Mandhana, supported by Harleen Deol (43 off 23), built a strong middle-order partnership that propelled India past the 200-run mark. Mandhana’s landmark ton made her only the second Indian woman to score a T20I hundred.

England’s chase never found momentum. Sree Charani, on her debut, stole the show in the second innings with a brilliant spell of 4/12. Only Nat Sciver-Brunt offered resistance with a gritty 66, but her effort was in vain as wickets tumbled at the other end.

Charani’s dream debut and Mandhana’s explosive knock ensured India’s dominance in the series opener. The visitors now lead 1–0 in the three-match series.

The second T20I will be played in Bristol on July 1.
