The Southwest Monsoon has officially covered the entire country, including the remaining parts of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed today. The monsoon’s nationwide spread has occurred nine days earlier than the usual date, marking a rare early onset over the entire subcontinent.
The IMD attributed the rapid advance to favourable atmospheric conditions, including the persistence of a low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and nearby coastal regions of West Bengal and Bangladesh. This system is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level.
The weather system is expected to move slowly west-northwestwards over the next two days, affecting regions like North Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand. This movement is likely to bring widespread rainfall and thunderstorms in these areas.
The early onset is expected to benefit agriculture and water management across the country, offering a positive outlook for the kharif crop season.
