Sri Lankan Navy Arrests 35 Indian Fishermen for Alleged Maritime Trespass

Published on

Chennai: The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 35 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Karaikal for allegedly crossing the maritime boundary while fishing in international waters.

According to reports, the fishermen were detained and taken to the Kankesanthurai naval camp for interrogation. Following the questioning, they were handed over to the Department of Fisheries officials in Jaffna for further procedures.

Boats Seized by Sri Lankan Authorities

The arrested fishermen had set out to sea in three mechanised boats and one country boat, all of which were seized by the Sri Lankan authorities.

Recurrent Issue Between India and Sri Lanka

Incidents of fishermen from Tamil Nadu being detained by the Sri Lankan Navy are frequent. Such arrests often lead to diplomatic discussions between the two nations over traditional fishing rights and maritime boundaries in the Palk Strait.

The Indian government is expected to take up the issue through diplomatic channels to secure the release of the detained fishermen and their boats.
