Supreme Court to Deliver Order in Stray Dogs Case on November 7

Published on

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will pronounce its order in the stray dogs case on November 7. A three-judge special bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and N V Anjaria took note that the chief secretaries of most states and Union Territories were present during the hearing.

States Directed to Explain Non-Compliance

Earlier, the apex court had directed chief secretaries of all states and Union Territories, except West Bengal and Telangana, to appear before it. The court sought explanations on why compliance affidavits had not been filed despite its earlier order dated August 22.

Most States Have Filed Affidavits

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the bench that most states and Union Territories have now submitted their compliance affidavits in response to the court’s directions.

Animal Welfare Board Made Respondent

In a significant move, the Supreme Court impleaded the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) as a respondent in the matter. The court also allowed intervention applications filed by victims of dog bites, ensuring that their concerns are represented in the proceedings.

The upcoming order on November 7 is expected to provide clear directives to balance animal welfare and public safety in the ongoing debate surrounding stray dog management.
