Data and internet connections are the foundation of the global village in which we live. A network of networks makes up the internet itself. The usefulness of any given network, be it mobile, fixed, satellite communications (satcom), or wi-fi, is greatly reduced if it is unable to link everyone.
Network externalities are nearly the only source of revenue for telecom and broadband. In light of this, the announcements of Reliance Jio the following day and Starlink’s partnership with Bharti Airtel on Tuesday are both thrilling. For large groups of Indians who are still underserved or unconnected, this is extremely encouraging news.
Starlink tie-ups with Airtel and Jio
Concerned subscribers’ quality of life may be improved by the newest satcom arrivals, particularly in rural areas. Even while mobile coverage in India has advanced significantly, the digital divide between urban and rural areas remains large at roughly 65%, having plateaued four to five years ago. Approximately 700 million individuals, or 48% of India’s total population, are still either underconnected or not connected at all.
The government has spent vast sums of money to assist major initiatives to connect the unconnected in rural and isolated places. However, success has been limited due to the difficulties of getting fibre and constructing towers. While terrestrial attempts have been hampered by significant operational issues, satellite airwaves have gone unused over connectivity-starved regions. As a result, it would make perfect sense for terrestrial mobile providers and satellite operators to communicate and collaborate in order to provide more people with high-speed internet connectivity.
Starlink collaborates with mobile operators throughout the world to provide high-speed internet connectivity at speeds ranging from 20 to 100+ Mbps. Such connectivity would be ideal for much of India. Complementing Airtel’s existing partnership with Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio’s agreement with Starlink will greatly improve both mobile carriers’ capacity to provide pan-India connectivity, particularly in areas with minimal or no terrestrial coverage at all.
Another important component in achieving a fully interconnected India including many sorts of networks is effective relationship management between domestic and foreign partners. Differences in social and cultural aspects would need to be considered and addressed carefully.
