Thousands of devotees gathered at the Tara Tarini Temple in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Tuesday as the Tara Tarini Chaitra Mela began with the first Tuesday of the Hindu month of Chaitra.
From the early hours of the morning, long queues formed at the temple situated atop the Ratnagiri Hills, with devotees offering prayers and seeking blessings from the revered twin goddesses.
The shrine was decorated with vibrant flowers and lights as pilgrims arrived in large numbers to participate in rituals marking the start of the annual festival.
Tara Tarini Chaitra Mela attracts massive pilgrim turnout
The Tara Tarini Chaitra Mela is one of the most important religious festivals in Odisha. Celebrated on every Tuesday of the Chaitra month, the event draws thousands of devotees from across the state and neighbouring regions.
During the festival, devotees offer prayers at the Bije Pitha and seek the blessings of the deities. Special arrangements are also made for darshan of the idols inside the sanctum.
The third Tuesday of Chaitra is traditionally considered the grandest day of the celebration, when the highest number of pilgrims visit the temple.
Mundan ritual remains a key tradition
One of the most significant rituals during the festival is the Mundan ceremony, where parents shave the hair of newborn babies as an offering to the goddess.
Devotees believe the ritual ensures protection and blessings for children.
To manage the large demand, temple authorities have arranged hundreds of barbers at the foothills and near the temple complex to perform the traditional ceremony.
Administration makes special arrangements for devotees
Local authorities have implemented extensive arrangements to ensure smooth crowd management during the festival.
Facilities include:
- Resting areas for pilgrims
- Drinking water points
- Traffic control around the temple route
- Additional security deployment
These measures aim to manage the heavy influx of devotees visiting the shrine during the festival period.
Mythological significance of the Tara Tarini shrine
According to Hindu mythology, the temple is believed to be one of the sacred Shakti Peethas, where the breast of Goddess Sati fell after Lord Shiva carried her body during his cosmic dance of destruction.
The site is therefore considered highly sacred, attracting pilgrims throughout the year.
The Tara Tarini Chaitra Mela marks one of Odisha’s most significant religious gatherings. With thousands of devotees visiting the hilltop shrine each Tuesday of Chaitra, the festival continues to remain a powerful symbol of faith, tradition, and community devotion in the region.
