Thailand Deploys F-16 Jets as Border Conflict with Cambodia Escalates into Airstrikes

Published on

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia intensified sharply on Thursday as Thailand deployed F-16 fighter jets along its northeastern border in response to Cambodian attacks on Thai military bases. The Royal Thai Army reported clashes at six locations near the disputed border, prompting retaliatory airstrikes.

F-16 Jets Strike Cambodian Military Targets

According to the Bangkok Post, the Thai Army confirmed that one of its F-16 jets fired into Cambodian territory, successfully destroying a military target.

“We have used air power against military targets as planned,” said Thai Army Deputy Spokesperson Richa Suksuwanon.

The jets were deployed early Thursday and, following the mission, safely returned to their bases. A Thai Army statement on social media confirmed:

“All Thai F-16s have returned home safely and intact, after a rapid deployment to drop bombs on Cambodian battalions.”

Rocket Attacks and Border Clashes

The Thai Army claimed that Cambodian soldiers launched several rocket attacks on military bases in Surin and fired shots towards Sisaket. The situation escalated after reports of a Cambodian drone sighted near the Ta Muen Thom temple, followed by sightings of six armed Cambodian soldiers approaching a Thai base.

At around 8:20 AM, Cambodia allegedly opened fire on a Thai military base. Thai authorities accused Cambodia of setting up artillery in civilian areas and using locals as human shields.

Cambodia Responds with Strong Allegations

Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence condemned the airstrikes, accusing Thailand of launching heavy weapons, rockets, and air raids in what it described as an attempt to seize Cambodian territory.

“These unlawful and irresponsible actions not only pose a grave threat to regional peace and stability but also undermine the foundation of international order,” said Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata, as quoted by the Khmer Times.

Cambodia also alleged that Thai fighter jets dropped two bombs on a road, violating existing bilateral agreements.

Citizens Being Evacuated

As tensions rise, Thailand’s Interior Ministry has begun evacuating residents from border villages as a precautionary measure to safeguard civilian lives.

Ongoing Blame Game

Both nations have accused each other of initiating Thursday’s hostilities, with no clear consensus on what triggered the latest escalation. The situation remains volatile, with international observers expressing concern over the risk of a wider conflict.
