‘The Bengal Files’ Box Office Collection Day 5: Vivek Agnihotri’s Film Nears Rs 10 Crore Despite Controversy

Published on

Vivek Agnihotri’s political drama The Bengal Files, which released on 5 September 2025, continues its steady journey at the box office. Despite controversies and stiff competition, the film has managed to maintain momentum with marginal growth on weekdays. According to early estimates, the The Bengal Files box office collection has inched close to the ₹10 crore mark by its fifth day, showing a small rise compared to Monday’s figures.

Day-wise earnings of The Bengal Files box office collection

The film earned ₹1.29 crore on Day 5 (Tuesday), slightly higher than the ₹1.15 crore collected on Monday. This brings the total domestic net to ₹9.19 crore. Here’s the day-wise breakdown:

  • Day 1 (Friday): ₹1.75 crore
  • Day 2 (Saturday): ₹2.25 crore
  • Day 3 (Sunday): ₹2.75 crore
  • Day 4 (Monday): ₹1.15 crore
  • Day 5 (Tuesday): ₹1.29 crore (early estimates)
    Total: ₹9.19 crore

While the weekend saw a decent run, Monday recorded a sharp 58% drop. Tuesday’s slight increase has offered the film some relief, though weekday collections remain modest. On Tuesday, the film recorded 34.91% overall occupancy, with night shows performing strongest at 53.22%.

Controversy in West Bengal over The Bengal Files

The release of The Bengal Files was embroiled in controversy in West Bengal. Reports claimed that multiple multiplexes refused to screen the film following alleged threats. This prompted co-producer and actor Pallavi Joshi to pen an open letter to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking protection for freedom of expression. In her statement, she highlighted that the film explores the “long-suppressed truth of the Hindu genocide of Direct Action Day, the horrors of Noakhali, and the trauma of Partition,” and accused the state government of mocking the project even before its completion.

Star cast powering The Bengal Files

The film boasts a strong ensemble cast led by Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, and Pallavi Joshi. Darshan Kumar and Simrat Kaur also play prominent roles, while Saswata Chatterjee, Namashi Chakraborty, Rajesh Khera, Puneet Issar, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sourav Das, and Mohan Kapur feature in supporting roles. The performances have been widely discussed, with Anupam Kher’s role receiving particular attention from critics.

Storyline and historical backdrop

The Bengal Files is presented as a fictional political drama inspired by real historical events. Set in the 1940s, the narrative portrays Bengal’s communal violence during Direct Action Day, the tragic Noakhali riots, and the devastating aftermath of Partition. The film seeks to revisit untold stories of trauma and displacement, positioning itself as the concluding chapter of Agnihotri’s Files Trilogy.
