Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has launched a sharp attack on the Central Government, questioning its handling of national security in the aftermath of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In a strongly worded interview with party mouthpiece Saamana, Thackeray demanded accountability for what he described as a shocking and enraging incident.
“Where Is the Normalcy They Promised?”
Thackeray questioned the government’s claims of restored normalcy in Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370, a move he supported at the time.
“We were told that Kashmir is peaceful now. Then how did this attack happen? Tourism was promoted, but security was overlooked,” he said.
He also condemned the loss of 26 lives in the attack, stating emotionally,
“Twenty-six women lost their sindoor. Who is responsible for wiping away the dignity of our mothers and sisters?”
“How Did Terrorists Vanish Into Thin Air?”
Thackeray raised serious concerns about how terrorists managed to penetrate Indian territory, carry out the attack, and escape without a trace.
“Even after three months, there’s no clarity. Photos of the attackers were released and then dismissed. They attacked and disappeared — where did they go?”
Questions Centre’s Silence on Trump’s War Claim
In a pointed remark, Thackeray also referred to repeated claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who said he intervened to prevent an India-Pakistan war.
“Trump has claimed this 27 times. Why has our Prime Minister with the ’56-inch chest’ remained silent?” he asked.
“Why Was the Army Pulled Back?”
Thackeray criticised the Operation Sindoor campaign that followed the attack, alleging that the military’s actions were politicised.
“Our army crossed the border, but then was pulled back. Why? What made the government retreat? It remains a mystery.”
Digs at BJP’s Age Policy and Modi
Taking a jab at the BJP’s unwritten age limit policy of 75 years for retirement, Thackeray asked whether PM Narendra Modi would follow the same rule.
“They forced Advani and Joshi to step down. Will Modi retire too, now that they’re celebrating his 75th with shawls?”
Accuses BJP of Splitting Shiv Sena
Thackeray also blamed the BJP for the split in the Shiv Sena, alleging that the party in power is now unwilling to uphold the Constitution.
“They tried to break, steal, and destroy our party. Those in power don’t even respect constitutional norms anymore,” he said.
Thackeray’s remarks come amid heightened political and national security tensions, reigniting debates over counterterrorism strategy, freedom of political expression, and the role of military operations in political narratives.
