New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated the process for the election of the next Vice President following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar. The development comes after the Ministry of Home Affairs officially notified the Commission of Dhankhar’s resignation, submitted on Monday, citing health issues as the reason for stepping down.

Election Process Underway

The Election Commission, empowered under Article 324 of the Constitution, has started the preparatory procedures necessary for conducting the Vice Presidential election. The election is governed by the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974.

According to the Commission, a formal election schedule will be announced once the preliminary groundwork is complete. One of the key steps underway is the preparation of the electoral college, which includes both elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.

The ECI will announce the election dates soon, after ensuring all constitutional and procedural requirements are met. The upcoming election holds national significance, as the Vice President also serves as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
