- TVK remains short of the majority mark in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
- VCK and IUML support uncertainty has stalled Vijay’s swearing-in prospects.
- Governor R N Ravi’s next move could shape whether Tamil Nadu gets a new government or faces political instability.
Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s political landscape entered a tense phase on Saturday as uncertainty deepened over actor-politician Vijay’s attempt to form the next government. Despite multiple meetings with Governor R. N. Ravi, the TVK founder is still waiting for the formal invitation to take oath as Chief Minister.
The central question now revolves around Thol Thirumavalavan and whether his party, the VCK, will back Vijay’s fledgling alliance at the final moment.
Vijay Government Formation Tamil Nadu Numbers Remain Tight
Vijay made a dramatic electoral debut by leading TVK to 108 Assembly victories. However, because he won from two constituencies, the party’s effective strength stands at 107.
The Congress, which controls five MLAs, broke ranks with the DMK-led alliance and extended support to TVK. Left parties CPI and CPI(M), with two MLAs each, also agreed to provide outside support while remaining aligned with the DMK bloc politically.
That pushed TVK’s support tally to 116, still two short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Initially, both VCK and IUML appeared willing to back Vijay, taking the tally to 120. But the situation shifted rapidly after mixed signals from both parties, triggering confusion over whether Vijay actually commands a majority.
Why VCK Has Become the Kingmaker in Tamil Nadu Politics
VCK’s hesitation has transformed Thol Thirumavalavan into the most influential figure in the current power struggle.
Party insiders indicated that VCK leaders were engaged in hard negotiations, including reported demands for the Deputy Chief Minister position. Thirumavalavan later met outgoing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin without publicly announcing his stand, adding another layer of suspense.
That meeting triggered speculation that the DMK may still be attempting to prevent a split in its alliance network and block TVK from taking power.
The second-order effect is significant. If VCK ultimately refuses support, Tamil Nadu could move toward a constitutional crisis, especially if no coalition proves a stable majority.
Governor’s Decision Could Decide Tamil Nadu’s Political Future
Governor R. N. Ravi has reportedly given Vijay time until May 10 to demonstrate majority support.
The delay in formally inviting him to form the government suggests Raj Bhavan is waiting for written commitments from alliance partners before proceeding.
Meanwhile, fresh controversy erupted after T. T. V. Dhinakaran accused TVK of submitting a forged support letter from his party’s lone MLA. Dhinakaran met the Governor and also filed a police complaint against Vijay.
The allegations have intensified concerns over possible behind-the-scenes political maneuvering and fears of horse trading.
Tamil Nadu Faces High-Stakes Political Uncertainty
The current deadlock is not just about government formation. It could redefine Tamil Nadu’s opposition politics and reshape alliance equations ahead of future national elections.
If Vijay succeeds, TVK would instantly emerge as a major regional force capable of challenging both DMK and AIADMK. If he fails to secure support, the state could face prolonged instability or even discussions around President’s Rule.
For now, Tamil Nadu’s political future rests heavily on the next statement from VCK and the Governor’s response to the shifting numbers game.
