Vijay Tamil Nadu Government Formation Clears Majority Mark

TVK crossed the majority threshold with backing from Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML, paving the way for Vijay’s swearing-in.

  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • TVK secured support from multiple alliance partners to reach 121 MLAs.
  • Vijay met Governor R V Arlekar after proving majority support.
  • Tamil Nadu is set to witness its first non DMK or AIADMK government since 1967.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu is on the verge of a major political transition after Vijay formally staked claim to form the government on Saturday. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief met Governor R. V. Arlekar after his party and supporting allies crossed the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.

With alliance backing, TVK’s strength rose to 121 seats, comfortably above the required majority figure of 118. The development effectively clears the path for Vijay to become Tamil Nadu’s next Chief Minister.

Vijay Tamil Nadu Government Formation Marks Historic Political Shift

TVK stunned political observers in its first-ever Assembly election by emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats.

Although the party initially fell short of a majority on its own, support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML changed the equation rapidly.

The support carries deeper political implications. For nearly six decades, Tamil Nadu politics has been dominated by the DMK and AIADMK power blocs. Vijay’s rise signals voter appetite for a third political force capable of disrupting the state’s traditional Dravidian political order.

Once sworn in, Vijay will become the first leader outside the DMK and AIADMK formations to lead the Tamil Nadu government since 1967.

VCK and IUML Support Became the Turning Point

Thol Thirumavalavan officially handed over a support letter backing TVK to form the government.

The letter stated that the support was extended in the interest of “stable and democratic governance” for Tamil Nadu and confirmed unconditional backing for the TVK-led alliance.

IUML leaders also submitted a separate letter to the Governor extending unconditional support to Vijay. Their statement emphasized the need for “stable, secular and democratic governance” in the state.

The second-order effect of these endorsements is politically significant. Smaller regional and ideological parties have now positioned TVK as the new center of opposition politics in Tamil Nadu, potentially weakening the long-standing alliance structures built around the DMK and AIADMK.

Congress and Left Support Strengthens TVK Alliance

Congress and Left parties also played a crucial role in helping TVK secure the numbers needed to form the government.

The Congress decision is especially notable because it indicates growing strategic flexibility within national opposition politics ahead of future parliamentary battles.

Political analysts believe the alliance could reshape Tamil Nadu’s coalition dynamics in coming years, especially if TVK successfully balances governance, welfare politics and regional identity issues.

Swearing-In Ceremony Expected in Chennai

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is also expected to attend the event, underlining the national attention surrounding Vijay’s rise from cinema icon to Chief Minister-designate.

The coming days will now test whether TVK can transform electoral momentum into stable governance, while managing a coalition that includes ideologically diverse allies united mainly by the goal of reshaping Tamil Nadu politics.
