Kolkata: Suvendu Adhikari was on Friday elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal, clearing the path for him to become the state’s first BJP chief minister.
The decision was taken during the BJP legislature party meeting in Kolkata, where Adhikari’s name was proposed and formally approved in the presence of senior party leaders and newly elected MLAs.
Amit Shah officially announced Adhikari’s selection during the meeting, signaling the party’s final move toward government formation in the state.
The development comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a sweeping victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the long-standing rule of the All India Trinamool Congress.
Adhikari emerged as one of the BJP’s key faces during the election campaign and played a central role in the party’s expansion across the state.
His elevation is being viewed as both a political and symbolic moment for the BJP, which had struggled for decades to establish a strong foothold in West Bengal.
The swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government is scheduled to take place at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on May 9.
Party leaders expect a large gathering for the event, which is likely to mark a major political transition in the state.
Adhikari’s appointment also signals the BJP’s focus on strengthening its leadership structure in eastern India following its landmark electoral breakthrough.
With the BJP preparing to assume power for the first time in West Bengal, attention will now shift toward cabinet formation, governance priorities, and the political transition after the end of TMC’s 15-year rule.
