White House Praises India as Strategic Ally, Signals Trade Deal Announcement “Very Soon”

Washington: In a major reaffirmation of Indo-US strategic ties, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized India’s critical role in the Indo-Pacific region, while also hinting at an imminent announcement on a long-awaited bilateral trade deal between the two nations.

During a press briefing on Monday (US local time), Leavitt responded to a question from ANI, praising the “strong personal relationship” between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“India remains a very strategic ally in the Asia Pacific, and the President has a very good relationship with Prime Minister Modi, and he will continue to have that,” said Leavitt.

Trade Agreement in Final Stages, Says White House

On the subject of a potential India-US trade deal, Leavitt confirmed that discussions are at an advanced stage.

“Yes, the President said that last week, and it remains true,” she stated. “I just spoke to our Secretary of Commerce about it. He was in the Oval Office with the President. They are finalizing these agreements, and you’ll hear from the President and his trade team very soon when it comes to India.”

This announcement aligns with President Trump’s recent remarks about the deepening economic partnership between the two democracies.

The remarks came as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is visiting the US for the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. On Monday, he inaugurated a UN exhibition titled “The Human Cost of Terrorism”, aimed at highlighting state-sponsored terrorism.

The QUAD, comprising India, the US, Australia, and Japan, is focused on fostering an open, stable, and resilient Indo-Pacific. It originated as a joint humanitarian response effort after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Trump to Attend QUAD Summit in New Delhi

Further strengthening bilateral ties, President Trump has accepted PM Modi’s invitation to attend the upcoming QUAD Summit in New Delhi later this year.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the development, noting that the leaders spoke on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada on June 18.

“For the next meeting of QUAD, PM Modi invited President Trump to India. While accepting the invitation, President Trump said that he is excited to come to India,” Misri said in a video message.
