Wild Elephant Found Dead in Dhenkanal; Electrocution Suspected in Tragic Incident

Published on

Dhenkanal: In a tragic incident, a wild elephant was found dead on Monday near Barihargudi village under the Hindol forest range in Dhenkanal district.

Local villagers spotted the carcass near a farmland and promptly alerted the forest department. Forest officials reached the site shortly after being informed and began an initial investigation into the cause of the elephant’s death.

Preliminary signs suggest that the elephant may have died due to electrocution, although forest officials have not confirmed the exact cause yet.

“An in-depth investigation is currently underway. We are also looking into the possibility of illegal electric fencing or low-hanging wires in the area,” a forest official said on condition of anonymity.

This incident adds to a growing list of similar cases across Odisha, where wild elephants have fallen victim to man-made hazards such as electrocution, train accidents, and shrinking habitats. Wildlife activists have repeatedly called for stronger measures to ensure the safety of migratory animals.

Forest officials are expected to submit a detailed report after the completion of the post-mortem and site inspection.
