World’s First Transatlantic Robotic Surgery Revolutionises Stroke Treatment

Published on

In a historic medical breakthrough, doctors have performed the world’s first transatlantic robotic surgery, connecting Scotland and the United States through advanced technology. The achievement marks a new era in remote medicine and stroke treatment, making life-saving care possible across continents.

Breakthrough in Transatlantic Robotic Surgery

The pioneering procedure linked the University of Dundee in Scotland and Jacksonville, Florida. Professor Iris Grunwald, an interventional neuroradiologist at Dundee, remotely performed a thrombectomy—a procedure to remove blood clots after a stroke—on a human cadaver 4,000 miles away. Hours later, Dr. Ricardo Hanel repeated the operation from Florida on a body in Dundee, achieving the world’s first successful transatlantic robotic surgery.

Technology Behind the Medical Innovation

The robotic systems used were developed by Lithuanian firm Sentante, supported by Nvidia and Ericsson’s high-speed, low-latency network technology. The robot, connected to standard catheters and wires, was controlled remotely with near-zero delay. Surgeons could view live X-rays and guide instruments in real time while a local medic managed the initial setup. Experts noted it required just 20 minutes of training to operate the system efficiently.

Global Impact on Stroke Care

This achievement has the potential to revolutionise stroke treatment worldwide. Stroke specialists emphasise that time is critical—every six-minute delay reduces a patient’s survival chance by one per cent. Remote robotic procedures can now allow top specialists to perform surgeries anywhere instantly, overcoming geographical barriers and saving thousands of lives.

The Future of Remote Medicine

The University of Dundee, recognised as a global training hub for interventional stroke treatment, hosted this experiment as part of ongoing research into tele-robotic healthcare. Clinical trials are expected in 2026 to make this system available for real patients. Experts believe the technology will soon enable patients in remote areas to access expert treatment within minutes, redefining the future of emergency medicine and global healthcare.
