Bhubaneswar: A 12-hour Odisha bandh is being observed across the state today from 6 AM to 6 PM over alleged errors in school textbooks for Classes 1 to 8.
The shutdown has been called by the Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan and Naba Nirman Yuva Chhatra Sangathan, which have raised concerns over alleged factual inaccuracies in textbooks and demanded corrective measures.
The organisations have alleged that 1,678 errors were found in the textbooks and have demanded withdrawal of the affected books, distribution of corrected editions and the resignation of School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond.
12-Hour Odisha Bandh Over Textbook Errors
The controversy relates to newly published textbooks used by students from Classes 1 to 8. The protesting organisations have argued that the issue involves more than spelling or printing mistakes and includes alleged factual errors.
The textbook issue has generated wider debate in Odisha, with government officials acknowledging errors and corrective measures being undertaken. The government has also started distributing revised textbooks after corrections were made.
Government Begins Distribution of Revised Books
The School and Mass Education Department has said that revised textbooks for Classes 1 to 8 have already started reaching students.
The government response comes amid continued demands from protesting organisations for accountability and replacement of books containing errors. The reported number of errors has also been disputed. An earlier government response rejected claims that the number of mistakes was as high as alleged by protest groups.
Odisha Bandh Security Arrangements
Ahead of the shutdown, authorities have taken measures to maintain law and order across the state.
District administrations have been alerted about the possibility of road blockades, vehicle stoppages, tyre burning and traffic disruptions at different locations. Officials have also been asked to monitor transportation and ensure the functioning of government offices and essential services.
The bandh has received support from opposition and Left parties, according to the information provided by the Home Department.
Security arrangements have consequently been strengthened in different districts to prevent any untoward incidents during the shutdown.
What the Protesters Are Demanding
The organisations behind the Odisha bandh today have raised several demands over the textbook controversy.
Their demands include:
- Withdrawal of textbooks containing alleged errors
- Distribution of corrected textbooks to students
- Accountability for the textbook preparation and publication process
- Resignation of School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond
The government, meanwhile, has already initiated the distribution of revised books, making correction of the textbooks a key part of its response to the controversy.
