Supreme Court Refuses to Cancel India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 Match Despite PIL

Published on

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to urgently list a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought cancellation of the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 match, scheduled for September 14.

A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi dismissed the request, stating there was no urgency. Justice Maheshwari remarked, “What is the urgency? It’s a match, let it be. Match should go on.”

The PIL was mentioned before the bench for urgent listing on Friday, but the court refused. When counsel highlighted that the match was on Sunday and the plea would become infructuous, Justice Maheshwari reiterated that the match should not be stopped, “Everyday one side, other side, there’s a match… one ball…”

PIL Seeks Cancellation of Cricket Match After Terror Attacks

The plea, filed by four law students, argued that playing cricket with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor was against national interest. The petitioners stated that holding the match would “belittle the sacrifices of armed forces and citizens who lost their lives to Pakistani terrorists.”

They contended that while soldiers laid down their lives, celebrating sports with Pakistan sent the wrong message and could hurt the sentiments of victims’ families.

Petitioners Demand Implementation of National Sports Governance Act 2025

Apart from match cancellation, the PIL urged the Ministry of Youth Affairs to implement the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, and to bring season-ball cricket under the National Sports Federation.

The plea also sought to bring the BCCI under the purview of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, arguing that under the new law, it should be accountable to the National Sports Board.

BCCI Impleaded as Party in the Case

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was made a party-respondent in the petition. The petitioners argued that “the dignity of the nation and security of citizens come before entertainment” and insisted cricket cannot be placed above national interest or sacrifices of soldiers.
