Bihar Assembly Elections 2025: Rebels and Independents May Alter Poll Equations

Published on

Bihar Assembly Elections 2025: Rebel and independent candidates are emerging as key factors that could alter the political equations for both the ruling NDA and the Opposition Mahagathbandhan in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections 2025, which will take place in two phases on November 6 and 11.

A total of 30 rebel and independent candidates are contesting in the first phase of the 243-member Assembly polls. Many aspirants denied party tickets have either joined smaller political outfits like Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party or chosen to contest independently.

Rebel Candidates Shake Alliances in Bihar Assembly Elections 2025

Discontent runs deep in both political alliances as rebel candidates enter the electoral fray. In the NDA, several leaders have defied party directives and decided to contest as independents. JD(U) MLA Narendra Kumar Neeraj, also known as Gopal Mandal, is contesting independently from Gopalpur, a constituency he has represented four times. The JD(U) has instead nominated former MP Shailesh Kumar alias Bulo Mandal from the same seat.

Similarly, BJP MLA Rashmi Verma is contesting as an Independent from Narkatiaganj, challenging her own alliance’s official nominee.

Ticket Denials and Technical Hurdles Add to Election Drama

Two high-profile nominations have already been rejected due to technical reasons.

  • Shashi Bhushan Singh, the sitting MLA from Sugauli (East Champaran), had filed as a Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) candidate, part of the INDIA bloc.
  • Seema Singh from LJP (Ram Vilas), a member of the NDA, also saw her nomination from Marhaura (Saran) cancelled.

Both instances have sparked frustration within the respective alliances, reflecting the growing discontent over ticket distribution and internal party decisions.

Constituencies Facing Intra-Alliance Clashes

Several Patna-based constituencies are witnessing open rebellion and intra-alliance contests, particularly between BJP, JD(U), and RJD rebels.

In Digha, BJP MLA Sanjeev Chaurasia faces stiff competition from JD(U) rebel Ritesh Ranjan Singh of Jan Suraaj, and Divya Gautam of CPI(ML) Liberation.

RJD Faces Internal Resistance in Several Seats

Rebellion is not limited to the NDA. In the Opposition camp, RJD too is grappling with internal friction. Former RJD candidate Ritu Jaiswal, who had unsuccessfully contested the 2020 assembly election, has filed her nomination against the official party nominee Smita Purbe, daughter-in-law of former RJD state chief Ram Chandra Purbe.

The growing number of rebels in both camps suggests that the Bihar Assembly elections 2025 could produce unpredictable results, as fragmented votes and local loyalties reshape the electoral battle across key constituencies.
