Self-reliance is not a slogan but a modern reflection of India’s ancient tradition: Rajnath Singh

Published on

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday reiterated India’s strong commitment to self-reliance, emphasizing that it is not just a political slogan but a continuation of the country’s ancient tradition of self-sufficiency. Speaking at the SIDM Annual Session 2025 in New Delhi, Singh said that India’s focus on indigenisation and defence manufacturing reflects its civilisational roots, where every village once served as a self-sustaining unit.

Rajnath Singh highlights India’s self-reliance tradition

Rajnath Singh stated that “India was called the Golden Bird because we fulfilled our needs from our own land.” He added that the present-day vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat is a modern expression of that same heritage. The Defence Minister stressed that indigenisation in defence production and advanced technology sectors represents the revival of India’s self-reliant ethos in a globalised world.

Self-reliance in defence sector crucial for national sovereignty

The minister underlined that the defence sector is not just a driver of economic growth but the foundation of national sovereignty. “Responsibility for safeguarding it is shared by every citizen, organisation, and industry,” he said. Referring to the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, Singh pointed out that the collective responsibility of protecting the nation has become more evident than ever.

Operation Sindoor shows strength of indigenous defence systems

Discussing the recent Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, Rajnath Singh noted that the situation briefly created an impression of an imminent war. However, the preparedness and performance of India’s indigenous defence systems strengthened national confidence. He highlighted the success of the Akash missile system, BrahMos, and AkashTeer air defence control system as examples of India’s growing technological prowess. “The success of our indigenous platforms has enhanced India’s reputation regionally and internationally,” he said.

Government policies boosting defence manufacturing ecosystem

Rajnath Singh also commended the efforts of India’s defence industry for their innovation, design, and manufacturing excellence. He mentioned that the government has implemented several policies to create a level playing field and incentivize defence manufacturing. “Our policies aim to strengthen the defence ecosystem, and today, the impact of these efforts is visible on the ground,” he said. Singh added that the preparedness for any future conflict must be based on indigenous capabilities, and India is taking strong steps in that direction.
