India fake news regulations: Government Stresses on Legal action to Curb Fake News and Deepfakes

Published on

New Delhi: Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Lok Sabha that the concerns raised about social media and the spread of fake news are extremely serious. He stressed that misinformation threatens the foundations of India’s democratic system and highlighted the urgent need for strict measures targeting social media platforms, misleading content, and AI-driven deepfakes.

He noted that the current use of social media has enabled certain groups to create ecosystems that disregard the Constitution of India and fail to comply with laws passed by Parliament. According to him, this situation makes it essential to implement stronger rules and take decisive action.

Responding to a question in Parliament, Shri Vaishnaw said that new regulations have been rolled out, including a requirement for platforms to remove flagged content within thirty-six hours. A draft rule has additionally been released to help identify and take appropriate action against AI-generated deepfakes, with consultations on these proposals ongoing.

The Minister acknowledged the efforts of the Parliamentary Committee and expressed gratitude to Shri Nishikant Dubey and other members for submitting a comprehensive report offering important recommendations to reinforce the legal framework.

Strengthening laws through India fake news regulations

New rules, faster takedown timelines, and targeted measures against AI-generated deepfakes highlight the Government’s broader goal of enhancing accountability through India fake news regulations.

He further explained that challenges related to fake news and social media require a careful balance between safeguarding freedom of expression and protecting the nation’s democratic values. He emphasized that the Government is approaching this balance with full sensitivity.

Shri Vaishnaw also pointed out that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Digital India initiative has led to significant technological transformation and expanded access to digital tools, achievements that deserve recognition.

He added that social media has empowered every citizen with a voice. Keeping these factors in mind, he said the Government is focused on strengthening institutions and reinforcing the trust that supports the fabric of society.
