New Delhi: Denmark Protests against Trump Greenland takeover remarks intensified on Saturday as demonstrators gathered across Greenland and Denmark, rejecting statements by Donald Trump suggesting the Arctic island should come under US control. Protesters demanded that Greenland’s citizens alone should decide their political future, amid rising diplomatic tensions.

Trump has repeatedly argued that US ownership of Greenland is essential for national security and NATO strength, declaring that “anything less” than American control would be “unacceptable.”

Trump’s Comments Trigger Diplomatic Strain

The remarks have sharply strained relations between the United States and Denmark, which governs Greenland while granting it broad self-rule. European members of NATO have also criticised the statements, warning that they undermine alliance unity.

Denmark has maintained that Greenland’s future can only be determined by its people, not external powers.

Thousands Rally Across Danish Cities

Large demonstrations took place in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg and Odense, where thousands gathered in solidarity with the Greenlandic population. In Copenhagen, protesters waved Greenland’s red-and-white flag and carried banners reading “Hands off Greenland.”

The demonstrations were organised by Greenlandic groups in cooperation with ActionAid Denmark, and were timed to coincide with a visit by US senators to Denmark.

Organisers said the protests aimed to send a clear message to Washington. “We demand respect for the Danish Realm and for Greenland’s right to self-determination,” a statement from ActionAid said, adding that the scale of turnout showed widespread support for Greenland.

US Lawmakers Seek to Ease Tensions

Amid the escalating dispute, a bipartisan US congressional delegation travelled to Copenhagen to meet Danish and Greenlandic leaders. Senator Chris Coons acknowledged the resilience of Greenland’s indigenous population, describing the island as a challenging place where a distinctive culture has flourished despite harsh conditions.

The delegation also emphasised the long-standing US-Denmark partnership, particularly in defence cooperation, and planned to honour Danish soldiers who fought alongside American troops in conflicts such as Afghanistan.

The protests highlight growing resistance in Europe to any suggestion of external control over Greenland, reinforcing calls for sovereignty and respect in Arctic geopolitics.
